Beach House – 7 | Video Review

I can’t believe we have never discussed my favourite band, the immortal Dream Pop duo, Beach House. They have recently released their much-anticipated seventh studio album, the delightful 7. The band often attract criticism for not evolving their sound enough, this album looks like an addressing of this as they move towards a heavier, more electronic direction, while retaining the core elements that fans love about their classic sound.

While I don’t think 7 is on the same level as their classic three albums (Teen Dream, Bloom, Depression Cherry) this is still a great journey. Beach House focus on the overall vibe of their projects and 7 is best consumed in a single sitting, rather than picking out individual tracks.

The pre-release tracks were enjoyable, but once placed in the context of the album they make far greater sense. Similar to how Kendrick Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle” seemed at odds with his usual style until we saw how it fit in with the wider story of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.
