MNEK has built his career in the background, producing and writing successful tracks for artists such as Beyoncé, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa, Diplo and Zara Larsson. Language is the debut project from the Lewisham artist and his attempt at a Bruno Mars-esq transition to the foreground.
Unfortunately Language lacks several elements to make it compelling enough to act as a true launchpad for MNEK’s solo aspirations. Despite writing Pop smashes like “Never Forget You”, Language is hook-deficient. MNEK might have given his best material to other artists.
There are promising moments on Language and MNEK offers a compelling slice of personality, however this isn’t enough on display to warrant repeated listens to the project.
