Meek Mill – Championships | Video Review

Championships is the fourth studio album from Meek Mill, and the Philadelphia-native has never sounded so hungry or introspective.

The album comes after a troubling year for Meek, he was imprisoned for a minor parole violation but this actually turned into a great PR move for the rapper. His legal situation brought a lot of attention to Meek and arguably boosted his career as the celebrity world rallied to his cause. When Meek Mill finally emerged for prison in April 2018 he was immediately flown by helicopter to a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game.

These things weren’t happening to Meek Mill in 2015, a low-point for the rapper’s career after he lost a very personal beef with Drake. In 2018 Meek Mill is very popular and represents a high-profile miscarriage of justice, consequently his music shows greater range and maturity.

Championships is released with this context and finds Meek embracing his new mainstream status to discuss important social issues. While there are Trap bangers and the like on here, the strongest moments of Championships come when we’re learning about Meek’s background and motivations.

As you’d expect ther tracklist features some big Hip-Hop names and includes: Cardi B, Kodak Black, 21 Savage, Jeremih, PnB Rock, Fabolous, Future, Young Thug, Ella Mai, Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Drake.
